Welcome to the Wairahi Tracks Charitable Trust

Welcome to the Wairahi Tracks Charitable Trust website.

The Trust was formed in 2020 with the primary object of developing a network of walking tracks in the Langs Beach area and linking those tracks with tracks in the surrounding area to enable residents and visitors to exercise in and enjoy the beauty of our local environment.

Thanks to a happy band of committed volunteers progress to date has been excellent and the track building in the Langs Beach area is now largely complete.

Our focus has now moved to the ‘Surrounding Area’ and some major challenges lie ahead. See ‘Vision’ below.

The Trust’s work has also resulted in a marked growth in community spirit and an increasing awareness of the need to care for the environment. We welcome all who would like to join our volunteer group, be a financial supporter and become part of our ‘Community’.

Our vision is

- to play a key role in the establishment of a network of walking, cycling and mountain bike tracks in the Wairahi/Bream Bay area with the ultimate goal of completing a shared user path (SUP) from Marsden Cove to Mangawhai – a key link in a round Northland trail, and

- to enhance the benefits of that SUP by continuing to develop and improve the adjacent network of trails.

A continuing commitment to building strong community spirit and protecting our environment will underpin all the Trust’s activities.

Our place

Langs Beach, Bream Bay, Northland, New Zealand

Langs Beach is an iconic, sandy, north-facing, pohutukawa-fringed beach in Bream Bay, on the east coast of the Northland peninsula of New Zealand’s North Island.

To our north lies the Pacific Ocean, and to our south lies the Piroa/Brynderwyn range, a recognised high-value conservation area where kiwi have recently been re-introduced.

We are one of many local kaitiaki groups engaged in the recovery of our precious ngahere from invasive weeds and predators.

  • Planted significant numbers of native plants and trees

  • Nurtured the planting by regular watering and weeding

  • Sought to protect the native birds and water species with a regular programme of pest control.
