Helping Out

At my school we are part of the William Pike challenge. For it we do community service. For my community service I decided to help my Granny and her friends to clear the stream and this is what we did with it.

On March 21st heaps of rain fell which lead to flooding. The flooding caused the stream to rise, and logs, sticks and mulch to get stuck in the puriri tree that usually sits on the water surface. This led to the stream being totally blocked.

On April second we removed the logs/sticks in the picture above as well as quite a few buckets of mulch. We did all of this to help to ensure that if there’s more heavy rain, the logs don’t go everywhere and also so that the mulch doesn’t ferment and pollute the river making a bad smell. Removing the logs reduced the chance of future flooding.

We did a lot for the time we spent on it, though sadly I had the tragic loss of a gumboot. We all ended up totally wet but it was fun.
