The Coastal Walkway is Open!

Written by Marg Tapper

Those of you who were holidaying at Waipu Cove or Langs Beach over Labour Weekend may have enjoyed a walk along The Coastal Walkway. What an improvement and a huge shout out to all those volunteers working with The Wairahi Tracks Trust to make it happen.

The Wairahi Tracks Trust undertook this work for the Whangarei District Council. At the end of January this year torrential rain caused a slip at the Waipu Cove end of the track and it’s thanks to the Council contractors that the track has been redeveloped. With all the rain we’ve had, it was touch and go if they would indeed make the Labour Weekend deadline.

The Friday Trackies meet every Friday morning for planned work in the WCTT area and it was all hands on over the winter to improve the surface of the track and make it safer.

Countless bags of metal have been filled and carried to vantage points on the track. New steps have been built and subsequently filled with metal, not to mention the sterling work of the team actually building the steps at the Ding Bay end. Then there’s the planting of all the flax along the walkway.

Friday Trackies sessions end with a glorious bacon and egg pie, and morning tea prepared so generously by Christine Birss. You’ll want to come back next Friday.

The WCTT does welcome any volunteers to join us - just get in touch.

We once again sincerely thank Mountfield Quarries and Northpine Ltd and Waipu ITM for their support.
