The Whakapapa of Matariki

Please see below an invitation to attend a talk and discussion led by local artist, designer and furniture maker Carin Wilson.

Carin Wilson Ngati Awa, Tuhourangi is a New Zealand studio artist, Furniture maker, sculptor and design educator. He is one of the Kahui Whetu of Nga Aho in proud recognition of a lifetime of leadership and his ongoing contribution to Māori and global indigenous design practice. In 2002 he received an inaugural Toi Iho mark. He continues to be a prolific and accomplished artist, designer and furniture maker with multiple awards. Carin was a member of the working group that presented Ngati Awa’s treaty claim to the Waitangi Tribunal. His work continues to explore learning and expression of his Māori heritage while recognising AotearoaNZ as an island group within the Pacific with comprehensive links to myths, narratives and practices that affirmed its Oceanic identity.

His purpose-designed and built Pukeruru studio continues to pursue the principle of learning through creative engagement with Māori principles of kaitiakitanga/custodial responsibility to the environment through exploration, observation and respect for heritage.
